What you need to know about interior design

Interior design is much more than that pasting up a few sheets of bold wallpaper. But it is also not as scary as digging out the power tools and recycling furniture. Whatever kind of interior design project or home improvement task you have ahead of you, it pays to learn a little about the thinking behind effective techniques and to pick up a few tips and tricks.
Whenever you are taking on a new project in the home you must remember that, first and foremost, rooms are there to be used. Achieving a show home finish is possible, but completely impractical for most families. Whatever you do you must ensure that the space remains usable and practical.

Texture

Different textures are a great way to highlight certain areas, and it is very cheap to introduce new textures. You could buy fluffy cushions or rugs or invest in some heavier curtains to help keep the bedroom dark at night. Sumptuous fabrics such as velvet give a luxury image, or opt for textures such as leather, wood and metal for a modern feel.

Patterns

Any pattern you introduce to a room should be chosen very carefully. Stripes make a big impact, but horizontal ones in a small room with a low ceiling will make the space feel closed in. Large repeat prints such as florals or geometric patterns are often used on chimney breast walls to create a focal point. Mixing patterns can create chaos, but can be done if you choose wisely – soft florals and polka dots work well together, but stripes and checks together are a big no-no.

Colour

In many cases your best bet for colour is to start with a palette of neutral or pastel colours and introduce one feature colour. This can be a bolder and brighter complementary colour, or even clash. Different colours have different effects on mood, so choose very carefully. For example, red should be avoided in the bedroom as it is a stimulating colour.

Wall art

You do not have to have something on every single wall, but if you have an empty space you can create a dramatic and interesting feature with a large canvas or poster. Or you could get creative and make a stencil or mural on the wall. Try not to clutter up every single blank space and think carefully before hanging pictures.
